Dead tree: is the time to remove it?
Trees are a pleasure to the eye, trees help us to shelter from the scorching sun, they beautify the appearance of the city and a country house. But they can also be a source of danger for people, buildings, communications, and automo-biles.
A tree must be removed if the stem is rotting, if it is affected by pests or damaged by storm, when it hinders the power lines, grows angularly with a high probability of falling, if the tree is dying or it is already dead.
But for a nonspecialist it is not always obvious that the tree is dead. Larch trees, for example, may seem dead in winter because their stems are bare.
If you are not sure whether the tree is dead, try the following test.
Take a penknife and scratch the bark on the shoots of your tree, or you can do that even with your thumb nail. Alive stem has green under the bark; if the color under the bark is brown – the stem is unfortunately dead. Also a living tree usually has smooth, firm bark; on the contrary, dead or dying tree’s shoots have flaking, peeling and wizened bark.
Then, if the shoots are dead at the tips, try to scratch the thicker wood to reveal if it is also dead. The plant is most likely dead, if all of its upper parts are brown under the bark.
Now there is just the last test to do. Scrape the roots or the bark of the main stem, better to do it just below the soil line. If you see dark color, check the roots – if they are soft, it means they are rotting. In this case there is no doubt that your tree is dead and must be removed.
Removing a dead tree by yourself is dangerous for you, your property and your neighbors. So, entrust it to a tree removal specialist.
Tree removal cost depends on the way it is done and can be estimated just by a professional arborist. And of course it is better to treat your trees properly, with the help of tree surgeons, trimmers and pruners.
